Skateboarding has been growing in popularity since the early 1980s, mostly because of the development of the skateboarding industry and the mass media that started to cover this sport. The sport itself has seen tremendous development, from the early days of tail-two-tails on city streets, to the entire process of creation of modern skateboarding, and the introduction of the skateboard with its blades, to the invention of skateboarding contests, such as the California Freeformers Professional Skateboard Championships in 1965. Not only has this sport grown, but also its morality has evolved, as skateboarding is not considered to be a sport that requires excessive mechanics and physical skills.
Skateboarding is however known to have certain dangers associated with it, including falling from high places, such as cliffs and stairs, or into body of water and traffic. Every year many skateboarders are injured badly enough to be hospitalized or to die, often in their teens and early twenties. In 1993 Grankin et al. published a study of skateboarding injuries in California and learned that from 1975 to 1992, hospital emergency rooms received 31,354 patients, 8,124 with injuries related to skateboarding. Included in this were 11,988 hospitalizations, while the likelihood of hospitalization was 60 times greater than that of the general public or 66 times if the particular location was a transmission-belt location such as a freeway.
At the time, the usual pressure to have a job was considered more important than a good hobby. But it is unclear whether these events resulted from the mere presence or from the real effects of the drugs. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), \"More than half of people who begin using heroin and cocaine do so in the context of abusing prescription opiates, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Lastly, the length of time skateboarders have been skating has increased in the past 20 years, and because of this, injuries have also increased, which has lead to more severe injuries that require longer hospitalizations. The 76 age group experienced the most skateboarding injuries in 1998, which was mostly because of the just-ended \"epidemic.\" Most of the injuries of this age group happened on higher levels, such as highways. 7211a4ac4a
